The Yorktown Bathroom Wish List
Most Yorktown houses were built between the 1950s and the 1980s. The bathrooms we’re asked to fix look a lot alike, and so do the wish lists.
One-and-a-half baths isn't enough
Adding a shower to a half bath, or finding room for a second full bath, is the top request in split-levels.
The original tile has to go
Pink, green or yellow tile set in a mortar bed, with a recessed tub and a small vanity.
The tub is never used
Swapping a 5-foot tub for a walk-in shower with glass and a niche.
We want to stay here
Low-threshold showers and grab-bar blocking for aging in place.
Inside a Mid-Century Bathroom Wall
When we open a 1960s Yorktown bathroom, we usually find galvanized supply lines, a cast-iron drain stack and a vent fan that exhausts into the attic, if there’s a fan at all. Those are worth fixing while the walls are open. We replace the supply lines with new piping, tie the fan into a duct to the outside, and waterproof the whole shower with a membrane system, not just cement board.

Yorktown Heights Bathroom FAQs
What permits does a Yorktown bathroom remodel need?
The Town of Yorktown Building Department at 363 Underhill Avenue handles building permits for alterations. Plumbing and electrical work need their own permits. We tell you which apply to your project and file them.
Can we turn our half bath into a full bath?
Often. In many Yorktown split-levels and colonials, the half bath sits near existing plumbing. What decides it is room for a shower, a drain line with enough slope, and an exhaust fan vented outside.
We still have the original pink or green tile. Is it hard to remove?
Mid-century tile was often set in a thick mortar bed over metal lath. It’s heavy and slow to demolish, but it is not a problem. We plan the extra demolition time, and we test old adhesives and flooring for asbestos before we start.
Can you make a bathroom safer for my parents?
Yes. A curbless or low-threshold shower, a bench, a hand shower, blocking for grab bars, slip-resistant tile and lever handles are all common upgrades in Yorktown homes where people want to stay for the long term.
Do you work in Mohegan Lake, Shrub Oak and Jefferson Valley?
Yes. They are all in the Town of Yorktown, so the permit process is the same.
