Which permit office handles my project?

Most Brewster addresses are in the Town of Southeast, whose Building Department is at 1 Main Street. Homes inside the Village of Brewster use the village’s own building department. We confirm which applies before drawings start.

Does the NYC watershed affect a home remodel?

Interior remodels usually aren’t affected. Work that adds impervious surface, disturbs soil near water or changes a septic system can involve New York City DEP review in addition to Putnam County Health Department approval. We identify that early for additions, decks and garages.

What about radon?

Putnam County is in EPA’s highest radon zone, so we recommend testing before finishing a basement or tightening up a house during a remodel. A mitigation system is easiest to install before walls are closed.

Does a job inside the Village of Brewster need the village's own forms?

Often, yes. The Village Building Department at 50 Main Street (845-279-3760) posts its own forms, including a dumpster permit and an owner consent form, and meets with applicants by appointment on Mondays and Wednesdays.
