Siding is the weather barrier for the whole house
Siding is the most visible part of a home and the first line of defense against wind-driven rain. When it fails, the damage usually shows up somewhere else: a stained ceiling under a window, peeling interior paint, or soft sheathing found only when the old siding comes off. A siding job that just covers the old problems with new panels will not last.
Guardian Remodeling Corp is a family-run contractor working since 1980. On every siding project we look at the sheathing, the water-resistive barrier and the flashing around openings, not just the material on the surface. You get a written estimate that says what we will replace, what we will repair and what we found.

Siding materials we install
We help you choose based on the style of the house, how much maintenance you want, and budget:
Vinyl siding
Low maintenance and economical, in many profiles and colors. Proper installation leaves room for expansion so panels do not buckle in summer heat.
Fiber cement
Rigid, heavy and paintable, with the look of painted wood. It needs careful handling and cutting, and precise detailing at corners and openings.
Wood siding and shingles
Clapboard and shingles suit older colonials and historic streets. Wood needs regular paint or stain, and we prime cut ends before installation.
Trim and accents
Corner boards, frieze boards, window and door casings and other trim, matched to the siding so the house reads as one design.
Siding Brands We Install
We install a lot of James Hardie fiber cement and CertainTeed vinyl siding, and our crews know these systems well, including each maker’s installation requirements. Here is why we use each one and where it fits.
Fiber cement siding by James Hardie
We reach for it when a house calls for the look of painted wood, such as a colonial or an older home on a historic street, without the upkeep of real clapboard.
- Lap, shingle-style and panel looks with matching trim
- Heavy and rigid, so long walls stay straight
- A good match for homes that will be painted a custom color
- Cut, gapped and fastened the way the maker’s instructions call for
Vinyl siding by CertainTeed
Our usual pick when low maintenance and budget lead the decision. It never needs paint, and it comes in a wide range of profiles and colors.
- Clapboard, board-and-batten and shake-style looks
- Matching trim, soffit and accessories
- Washes clean with a garden hose
- Hung loose enough to expand and contract, so panels don’t buckle
Not sure which is right for your house? We’ll compare both in your written estimate. For roofing, Guardian is a GAF Certified™ Roofing Contractor (2026).

What happens under the new siding
Siding for Westchester and Putnam weather
Our winters bring freeze-thaw cycles, ice dams and wind-driven snow; summers bring heat and humidity. Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature, so it has to be fastened to move. Wood and fiber cement need sealed or primed cut ends and correct clearances above roofs, decks and grade so they do not wick water.
Houses on wooded lots, which are common in northern Westchester and Putnam, stay damp longer and see more mildew on north walls. That can steer the choice of material and color, and how often the walls need cleaning.
Some villages, such as Cold Spring, review exterior changes in historic districts before a permit is issued. We check those requirements with your municipality before the job is scheduled.
Repair, partial replacement or a full re-side
Not every siding problem calls for a whole new exterior. Storm damage to one wall, a section of vinyl melted by a grill, or rot along the bottom course next to a deck can often be repaired with matching material. The challenge is matching: vinyl colors fade with sun exposure and older profiles are discontinued, so a patch may never blend in perfectly on a front wall. In that case some homeowners re-side one full elevation so the change lands at a corner, where it is far less noticeable.
A full re-side makes sense when problems are spread around the house, when the sheathing or barrier underneath has failed in several places, or when you want to change the look of the home entirely. It is also the best time to address trim, add insulation board where the design allows it, and correct flashing details the original builder missed.
We give you the options that fit what we find, with the trade-offs in plain language, and you decide.

Siding FAQs
How do I know if my siding needs to be replaced rather than repaired?
Isolated damage, such as a few cracked vinyl panels or a rotted corner board, can usually be repaired. Widespread warping, soft sheathing underneath, recurring leaks around openings, or siding that no longer matches anything available point toward replacement. We will tell you which we see and show you why.
Do you replace windows when you re-side?
No. Guardian does not install windows. When we re-side, we work around your existing windows and doors, tying the new house wrap, flashing and trim in around them.
Which siding material is best here?
There is no single answer. Vinyl is the most economical and lowest-maintenance; fiber cement is heavier, more rigid and paintable; wood suits older and historic houses but needs regular painting or staining. We help you weigh appearance, maintenance and budget for your house.
Do I need a permit for new siding?
Requirements differ by municipality, and some villages with historic districts review exterior changes before work starts. We check with your building department and file whatever is required.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Westchester County HIC #WC-38383-H24 and Putnam County HIC #52594, plus Connecticut Home Improvement Contractor registration HIC.0707535 and NYC General Contractor Registration #627789, and we carry insurance.
What warranty comes with a siding job?
Our workmanship is covered for 1 year. Siding products also carry the manufacturer’s own warranty.

Vinyl, fiber cement or wood: how do they really compare?
Vinyl siding never needs painting, comes in many colors and profiles, and usually costs the least. It can crack from a hard impact in cold weather. Fiber cement is heavier and more rigid. It’s noncombustible, holds paint well and can look like wood clapboard or shingles, but it costs more to install and needs repainting over time. Wood clapboard and cedar shingles look authentic, which suits older homes, but they need regular painting or staining to resist rot. We’ll help you weigh looks, upkeep and budget.
Can you replace just one damaged section instead of the whole house?
Often, yes. The challenge is matching. Older vinyl fades, and profiles and colors get discontinued, so a new piece can stand out. Common fixes are replacing one whole wall so any difference breaks at a corner, or moving original siding from a less visible side to the repair and putting new siding on the hidden side. If damage is widespread or the sheathing underneath is soft, a full replacement usually makes more sense. We’ll show you which options fit your house.
Should I replace my roof and siding at the same time?
It’s worth considering if both are aging. The most leak-prone spots on a house are often where the roof meets the walls, including step flashing, kick-out flashing and trim. One contractor doing both can flash those joints together, line up the trim and gutters, and pick colors that work as a set. You also get one schedule and one cleanup. Guardian does both roofing and siding. Roof replacements carry our 10-year workmanship warranty, and siding carries our 1-year workmanship warranty.
What if there's rot under my old siding?
It’s common on older houses, especially at window and door sills, at corners, and on walls with roof run-off. Once the old siding is off, we look at the sheathing and trim boards. Soft or rotted sections get replaced before the new house wrap, flashing and siding go on, because new siding over rot just hides the problem. We’ll show you what we find and talk it through before we close it up.
