Remodeling a Bathroom in a White Plains Apartment
Downtown White Plains and the corridors around it have many co-op and condo buildings, from prewar walk-ups to newer towers. Remodeling a bathroom there is as much about the building as the bathroom. Expect to work through:
- The alteration agreement, with your board or managing agent’s approval before work starts.
- Insurance certificates naming the building and its management.
- Work hours, elevator reservations and debris rules.
- Riser shutoffs, scheduled with the super so neighbors aren’t caught off guard.
- City permits where plumbing, electrical or structure change, closed out after final inspection.
We handle that paperwork and logistics so you aren’t stuck in the middle between the board and the contractor.

Tight Rooms, Smart Layouts
Apartment bathrooms are usually 5 by 8 feet or close to it, with the plumbing wall fixed by the building’s risers. Within that, a lot can change. A tub can become a walk-in shower with a glass panel, a wall-hung vanity frees up floor space, a recessed medicine cabinet adds storage, and better lighting makes the room feel bigger.
In single-family homes around Gedney Farms, Fisher Hill and the Highlands, older baths have more room to work with but more hidden age: original drains, plaster walls and small windows. Those projects look more like our Scarsdale bathroom work.

White Plains Bathroom FAQs
I'm in a co-op. What comes first, the board or the City?
The board. Most White Plains co-ops and condos require an alteration agreement and management approval before work starts, and that review usually comes before any City filing. We supply the insurance certificates, scope and drawings the building asks for.
Does the City of White Plains require a permit for a bathroom?
If you move plumbing or fixtures, change electrical work or alter structure, yes. The Building Department has a short-form application for alterations and renovations, which requires dimensioned plans. Plumbing and electrical work must be done by licensed tradespeople, who file their own permits.
What happens when the job is done?
The permits are closed after final inspection. In a co-op or condo, management usually wants the closed permit or certificate as proof, and we deliver it.
How do you protect the unit below?
We waterproof the shower pan and walls with a continuous membrane and flood-test the pan before tile goes in. We also coordinate any riser shutoff with the super in advance.
Do you also remodel bathrooms in single-family homes in White Plains?
Yes. We work in neighborhoods such as Gedney Farms, Fisher Hill, Battle Hill and the Highlands, where many homes date from the early and middle 1900s.
