In Scarsdale, Siding Is a Design Review

Scarsdale is one of the few places where the Village’s own rules spell out the small parts of an exterior. Applications to the Board of Architectural Review show both the existing and proposed elevations and call out the treatment of fascias, corner boards, gutter returns and downspouts, along with the materials for siding, trim, shutters and chimneys. The BAR’s stated mission is to preserve and promote the character and appearance of buildings in the Village.

For a siding project, that means the trim plan is decided before ordering, not improvised on the ladder. We measure each elevation, photograph it, and draw what changes, so the Board sees exactly how the new siding meets the stone, stucco and trim already on the house.

What We Find Under Old Siding

Many Scarsdale houses date to the 1920s and 1930s. Under old shingles or aluminum we often find original board sheathing, gaps where insulation was blown in decades ago, and little or no water-resistive barrier. Around doors, porch roofs and at the bottom course, water has usually found its way in.

We remove the old material, repair damaged sheathing, install a proper barrier and new flashing at every opening and roof-to-wall joint, then hang the new siding and trim. The photos here are from a real Guardian siding replacement; you can see the full before-and-after on our siding page.

Siding Materials That Suit Scarsdale

Wood shingles and clapboard

Traditional on colonials and shingle-style houses; painted or stained.

Vinyl in traditional profiles

Low maintenance; best on secondary elevations or houses already sided in vinyl.

Fiber cement as an option

Rigid and paintable, for owners who want a wood look with less upkeep.

Trim and accents

Corner boards, friezes and casings sized to the house’s original proportions.

Scarsdale Siding FAQs

Does new siding in Scarsdale go to the Board of Architectural Review?

If it changes the appearance of the house, plan on it. The Village sends alterations that change a building’s appearance to the BAR, which meets every two to three weeks. Matching the existing material and color is the simplest path; a change from shingle to clapboard, or a new color scheme, is a design decision the Board weighs.

What does the BAR want to see?

The Board’s rules ask for drawings of every elevation being altered, showing existing and proposed conditions, with materials for siding, trim and roofing called out and details like fascias, corner boards, gutter returns and downspout locations shown. Photographs of the elevations and samples of the materials are part of it too.

Is BAR approval the same as a permit?

No. After the BAR approves, the Building Department still reviews the plans for code compliance and issues the permit. We request that review as soon as the approval is in.

Can you match half-timbering and stucco on a Tudor?

Often, yes. On many Scarsdale Tudors the siding is only part of the exterior, with stucco, stone and decorative timbers around it. We repair or replace the sided areas and detail the joints so the house still reads as one design.

What warranty comes with siding?

One year on our workmanship, in writing, plus the siding manufacturer’s own product warranty.
