Siding in Putnam Lake, NY

Westchester & Putnam Siding Service Serving Putnam Lake

Siding for Putnam Lake’s bungalows and enlarged cottages, built close together on small lots in the Town of Patterson. One siding system for houses that grew in stages.

A 1920s Summer Colony, Now Year-Round

Putnam Lake was developed starting in the late 1920s by the Smadbeck brothers. A New York newspaper promotion sold small lots, typically 20 by 100 feet, and buyers put up summer bungalows around the lake. Over the decades most of those cottages were winterized, raised or extended, and the hamlet became a year-round community with well over a thousand homes.

Those changes show up on the outside walls. It’s common to find original wood siding on the front, cement-based shingles on an early addition and vinyl on a newer back room, each with its own trim and flashing, or no flashing at all. Re-siding is a chance to make the house one building again.

Putnam Lake Siding Challenges

Tight side yards

Neighbors a few feet away. We work wall by wall with tarps down.

Mixed cladding

Three materials, three eras. Everything comes off to the sheathing.

Old shingles

Cement-based shingles are tested before removal, where required.

Thin walls

Little insulation behind the siding. Rigid foam is an option.

One Continuous System

Once the old cladding is off, we fix the sheathing, close the gaps where additions meet the original house, and wrap everything in a water barrier lapped from the bottom up. New flashing goes at every porch roof, deck ledger and opening, followed by the new siding, corners, trim and soffit, so the whole house uses the same details.

Vinyl is the usual choice here because it’s affordable and low-maintenance, but cedar and board-and-batten are available. Permits go through the Town of Patterson, and our Putnam County HIC #52594 goes in with the application. The photo shows a finished Guardian siding job.

Putnam Lake Siding FAQs

Which town handles permits for Putnam Lake?

Putnam Lake is a hamlet in the Town of Patterson, so permits come from the Patterson Building Department at Town Hall, 1142 Route 311.

Our lot is tiny. Where does the dumpster go?

Many Putnam Lake lots began as 20-by-100-foot parcels, so space is tight. We size the container and schedule pickups to fit the driveway or street, and we use smaller deliveries when space is tight.

Our cottage has three kinds of siding. Can you make it match?

Yes. Many original bungalows were enlarged over the years, each time with whatever siding was available. We strip all of it, repair the sheathing and install one continuous siding system.

Is it worth insulating while the siding is off?

Often, yes. Older summer cottages usually have little wall insulation. With the siding off, we can add rigid foam behind the new siding if your walls and trim allow it, and we’ll price it separately.

What warranty comes with siding?

One year on our workmanship, in writing, plus the siding manufacturer’s own product warranty.
