Septic, Wells and Your New Bathroom
Outside the hamlet center, most Armonk houses rely on a private well and an on-site septic system. That raises fair questions about a new bathroom. The good news: New York’s septic standards size systems by bedrooms. A larger shower or a second sink in the primary suite doesn’t make your house a bigger house in the system’s eyes.
Where the County does come in is when a project adds bedrooms or changes the system. North Castle’s building permit application asks directly whether Westchester County Department of Health approval is needed for septic or well work, and the County issues a no-objection on the existing system when the Town refers an addition or modification. The bathroom in the photo is a Guardian project with a black double vanity and herringbone marble floor.

North Castle, Step by Step
- Application. Filed with the Building Department at 17 Bedford Road, with our Westchester County home improvement license and insurance.
- Health and flood questions. The application asks about County Health approval for septic or well, and whether a flood development permit is needed for work in the floodplain.
- Plan review. The Town aims for 2 to 4 weeks on the first review.
- Inspections. Requested the day before, at rough-in and at the end.
North Castle requires every plumber and electrician working in the Town to hold a Westchester County license. Ours do.

Armonk Bathroom Remodeling FAQs
I'm on septic. Can I add a bathroom?
Usually, yes. New York’s septic standards size tanks by the number of bedrooms, not bathrooms. If the bath comes with a new bedroom, or the project changes the house’s use of the system, the County Health Department may need to review it. North Castle’s application asks whether that approval is required.
What is the County's 'no objection'?
When a local building department refers an addition or modification on a house with a septic system, the Westchester County Department of Health issues a no-objection on whether the existing system is adequate. We find out early if your project needs one.
Do you work on well water?
Yes. Many Armonk homes have private wells. We protect the supply during the work and size fixtures and any treatment equipment to what the well can deliver.
How long is North Castle's review?
The Town’s guide sets a goal of 2 to 4 weeks for the first review and 2 to 3 weeks for re-reviews.
What warranty comes with the bathroom?
Workmanship is guaranteed for a year, in writing. Product warranties come from the companies that make the fixtures and finishes.
