Remodel the Bath You Have, or Add One?
Most Pound Ridge bathroom projects fall into one of two kinds. Remodeling an existing bathroom, with new tile, a walk-in shower and a new vanity, is interior work permitted by the Town Building Department (914-764-5511). Adding a bathroom is where Pound Ridge’s well and septic setting comes into play.
Westchester County Health Department rules base septic tank capacity on bedrooms, and an expansion attic may be counted as one. When a project adds a bedroom, the Town’s site plan application says preliminary County Health Department approval is needed before the Planning Board will review it. We sort out which kind of project you have on the first visit. The bathroom in the photo is a Guardian remodel with a glass shower and black marble floor.

Planning a New Bath in Pound Ridge
1. Count the bedrooms
Will the work add a bedroom, a finished attic or a suite?
2. Check the systems
Septic location, well equipment and any wetland nearby.
3. Line up approvals
County Health first if needed, then Town boards and permits.
4. Build & inspect
Rough-in, inspections, tile and fixtures, final.
Wetlands and the Outside of the House
Interior bathroom work rarely leaves the house, but an addition or a new exterior vent can. Work that comes within 150 feet of a wetland needs a permit from the Town’s Water Control Commission, which holds its meetings at 8 PM on the second Wednesday and wants applications two weeks ahead. Historic houses can also face landmark review for exterior changes. We look at both before an addition is designed.

Pound Ridge Bathroom Remodeling FAQs
Can adding a bathroom affect my septic approval?
It can. Westchester County Health Department rules size septic tanks by the number of bedrooms, and an expansion attic may be counted as a bedroom. If a new bathroom comes with a new bedroom or a finished attic, the County may need to review the septic system.
We're adding a bedroom suite. Is there extra review?
Yes. The Town of Pound Ridge’s residential site plan application says that when bedroom additions are proposed to an existing house, preliminary Westchester County Health Department approval is needed before the Planning Board.
Does a plain bathroom remodel go to the Planning Board?
Usually not. Redoing an existing bathroom inside the house is a Building Department permit. The extra boards come in when the footprint, bedrooms or nearby wetlands change.
Is our well a concern?
We check well equipment and water treatment before planning a new shower or tub, because fixture choices and space for equipment can depend on it.
What warranty comes with the bathroom?
One year on Guardian’s workmanship, in writing, plus the product makers’ warranties.
