In Bedford, Siding Is Often a Historic Question
The Town of Bedford has two local historic districts, and both care about siding. That’s different from roofing, where Katonah’s rules are lighter. Here is how a siding project usually moves through the Town:
| Where the house is | First step | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Bedford Village Historic District | Certificate of Approval from the Review Commission (exterior materials and paint color included) | Town building permit |
| Katonah Historic District | Certificate of Approval from the Katonah commission after a public hearing, if the change is major | Town building permit |
| Rest of the Town | No historic review | Town building permit at 425 Cherry Street |
The Town’s permit application itself asks whether the property is in either district and whether it is on the Historic Properties List, so we answer those questions before anything else.

What Old Bedford Walls Hide
Many houses near the Bedford Village green and in Katonah date to the 1800s or earlier. Under later layers of aluminum or vinyl we find original clapboard, plank sheathing with gaps, old nails that have rusted through, and sills soft from decades of splashback. Country houses farther out often have long wall runs exposed to weather with little overhang.
We take the wall back to sound sheathing, repair or replace sill and corner boards, and add a proper water-resistive barrier and flashing before the new material goes up. On historic houses we keep trim proportions, corner boards and exposure the same so the house still looks like itself. That photo comes from one of our own siding jobs, not a catalog.

Bedford Siding FAQs
Does new siding in Bedford Village need approval?
If the house is in the Bedford Village Historic District, yes. The Town’s Review Commission requires a Certificate of Approval for any action that alters the exterior façade, and its application lists renovation of exterior materials and changes in paint color. The certificate has to be obtained before applying for the Town building permit.
And in Katonah?
The Katonah Historic District Review Commission reviews major changes to exterior appearance, and siding is one of the items it covers, unlike roofs and paint colors, which it excludes. Outside both districts, siding goes straight to the Building Department.
How many copies does the Bedford Village Commission want?
Six copies of the completed application, submitted to the Building Department at 425 Cherry Street in Bedford Hills. We assemble the drawings, photographs and material samples and handle the submission with your signature.
Can you match old clapboard on part of a house?
Often. On older Bedford houses we can mill or source clapboard and trim to match an existing profile for a repair, or re-side a full elevation so the change falls at a corner instead of mid-wall.
What warranty comes with siding?
One year on our workmanship, in writing, plus the siding manufacturer’s own product warranty.
