Roofing in New Rochelle, NY

Westchester Roofing Service Serving New Rochelle

Roof replacement and repair across New Rochelle, from the north-end streets near Wykagyl to Rochelle Park and the waterfront neighborhoods on the Sound. Historic district approvals planned in, not discovered late.

One City, Two Roofing Paths

For most New Rochelle houses, a new roof is a building permit matter handled by the Buildings Department at City Hall. For about 275 properties, it isn’t that simple. Rochelle Park–Rochelle Heights, the City’s first local historic district, designated by the City Council in 1986 and listed on the National Register in 2005, has its own review, and new roofs are specifically on the list of work that needs approval.

Knowing which path you are on is the first thing we check, because it changes the schedule. A roof outside the district can often start soon after the permit. Inside it, the job waits for the HLRB, which meets monthly, so we prepare the application while you are still choosing shingles.

How Historic District Roofing Works

1. Building application

Filed with Buildings, which decides whether HLRB approval is required.

2. Referral letter

Buildings issues it if the Board must review the roof.

3. HLRB application

Photos of the house and neighbors, plans, material samples and color documentation, and the $110 fee, to the Department of Development.

4. Board meeting

Second Wednesday of the month, with real samples brought to the hearing.

5. Certificate and permit

The Certificate of Appropriateness is posted on the house and the roof goes on.

Roofs on Older New Rochelle Houses

Much of New Rochelle was built between the late 1800s and the middle of the last century: Victorians and Queen Annes with turrets and porches, Tudors and colonials, and plenty of two-family houses. Their roofs have more edges, dormers and porch tie-ins than a modern house, and older houses sometimes have two layers of shingles already.

We tear off to the deck, replace damaged boards, and rebuild the flashing at every wall, chimney and porch roof. Roofing crews are licensed and insured and are supervised by a Guardian project manager; Guardian is Westchester County HIC #WC-38383-H24 and has worked since 1980 as our family team of five brothers, working alongside their father.

New Rochelle Roofing FAQs

Where do I apply for a roofing permit in New Rochelle?

At the Buildings Department on the ground floor of City Hall, 515 North Avenue. The department also decides whether your address needs historic review first.

I live in Rochelle Park or Rochelle Heights. What's different?

The City’s Historical and Landmarks Review Board says new roofs in the local historic district need a Certificate of Appropriateness. Buildings sends a referral letter, the HLRB application goes to the Department of Development with photos, plans, material samples and a $110 fee, and the Board meets on the second Wednesday of the month.

Do we have to put the certificate somewhere?

Yes. Once a Certificate of Appropriateness is issued, it has to be displayed prominently on the property, usually in a front window, until the work is complete.

Do you roof two-family houses?

Yes. We plan the work so both households know the schedule, protect shared entries and porches, and keep the driveway usable where we can.

What's the warranty on a New Rochelle roof?

Ten years on the roofing and one year on all other workmanship, in writing, plus the manufacturer’s warranty on materials.
