Same Roof Line, or a New One?
The first question we ask on a West Harrison roof isn’t about shingle color. It’s whether the shape of the roof stays the same. Harrison’s Town Code (Section 235-66) gives the Architectural Review Board a list of features it compares with neighboring houses, and roof lines, the slope of the roof and the eaves are on it. A tear-off and new shingles on the existing frame leave those features alone. Raising a ridge for headroom, adding a shed dormer to a cape or extending the eaves over a new porch changes them.
| Your project | What to expect in Harrison |
|---|---|
| Re-roof, same shape and pitch | Building Department permit; scope confirmed before we schedule |
| New dormer or raised ridge | Drawings by a licensed design professional, Board review, then the permit |
| Porch roof added or rebuilt | Usually drawings and Board review, depending on the category |
| Leak repair or flashing work | Often a small repair; we confirm with the department first |
The table is a planning guide rather than the Town’s rulebook. The Building Department assigns each application to a lettered category, and we confirm that category before your estimate gives a start date.

West Harrison Roofs We Work On
West Harrison’s streets off Lake Street and Route 22 are full of mid-century capes, side-hall colonials and two-family houses, many with a second layer of shingles nailed over the first. That extra layer hides soft decking and traps heat, so we never roof over it. Each job is stripped to the boards, damaged sheathing is replaced, and ice barrier goes along the eaves and in every valley before the underlayment.
Two-family houses need extra planning: two entrances to keep clear, two sets of tenants to notify and, often, two chimneys to re-flash. Low-slope porch and dormer roofs get a membrane rather than shingles. The photo shows one of our own replacements with the wood deck exposed, the stage where hidden damage shows up.

West Harrison Roofing FAQs
Is West Harrison its own village with its own building office?
No. West Harrison is a hamlet of the Town/Village of Harrison, so roofing permits come from the Harrison Building Department at the municipal building, 1 Heineman Place (914-670-3050). The same office covers downtown Harrison and Purchase.
If the Architectural Review Board approves my plans, is that my permit?
No. Harrison’s permit package says Board approval is not a building permit. The permit is issued separately by the Building Department, so a dormer or roofline change needs both steps. We track each one.
Which roof changes does the Board notice?
Section 235-66 of the Town Code lists features the Board compares with nearby houses, and roof lines, the slope of the roof and the eaves are on that list. Replacing worn shingles on the same roof shape changes none of them; raising a ridge, adding a dormer or squaring off a hip roof can.
When does the Board meet?
The Architectural Review Board meets on the second Tuesday of each month. Submissions are due the Monday of the week before, so we build that date into your schedule when a roof change goes to the Board.
What warranty comes with the roof?
Ten years on the roof we install and one year on all other workmanship, both in writing. The shingle manufacturer’s product warranty is separate.
