A Short Checklist Before a Chappaqua Bath

Chappaqua is a hamlet of the Town of New Castle, and bathroom permits go through the Town’s Building Division at Town Hall, 200 South Greeley Avenue. Its application has a few items that catch people off guard on a bathroom job:

  1. Septic or sewer proof. Existing homes show a septic pump-out within the past five years, or proof of connection to the sewer.
  2. Bedrooms. Westchester County Board of Health approval is needed for bedroom additions, so a bath that comes with a new bedroom is planned with that in mind.
  3. Outside changes. A new window, skylight or dormer for the bath goes to the Architectural Review Board, which reviews most exterior changes before a permit is issued.

We gather those items first, so the Building Division gets a complete application.

Upgrading Chappaqua Primary Baths

Chappaqua’s housing is mostly single-family: older colonials near the hamlet center, and larger homes from the 1950s onward on the winding roads toward Millwood. Many have a primary bath from the 1980s or 1990s with a corner whirlpool tub that’s rarely used. Swapping it for a large walk-in shower and a freestanding tub, or giving the space to a double vanity, is our most common Chappaqua request.

The bathroom in the photo is a Guardian project with a frameless glass shower, a freestanding tub and marble-look floor tile.

Chappaqua Bathroom Remodeling FAQs

Why does New Castle ask about my septic for a bathroom?

The Town’s building permit application asks existing homes for proof of a septic pump-out within the last five years, or proof of a sewer connection. It’s part of the application, so we ask for it at the start.

Will adding a bathroom need County Health approval?

The New Castle application calls for Westchester County Board of Health approval for new residences and for bedroom additions. A bathroom on its own doesn’t add a bedroom, but a bath that comes with a new bedroom or a finished attic can bring the County in, because septic systems are sized by bedroom count.

Which building codes apply now?

New Castle’s Building Division notes that the 2025 New York State codes took effect on December 31, 2025. New work is designed to those.

Does an interior bathroom go to the ARB?

New Castle’s Architectural Review Board reviews most exterior changes before a permit is issued. A bathroom inside the house usually doesn’t go there, but a new dormer, window or bump-out for a bath does.

What warranty comes with the bathroom?

You get one year on workmanship, written into the contract, and the product warranties for everything we install.

We are just over the line in Pleasantville. Who issues the permit?

The Village of Pleasantville runs its own Building Department at 80 Wheeler Avenue (914-769-1926), separate from the Town of New Castle offices that cover Chappaqua. Its plumbing permit application asks for the plumber’s license number. See bathroom remodeling in Pleasantville.
