Is a City license needed on top of the County license?

It is. Yonkers issues its own Home Improvement Contractor license through the Consumer Protection Bureau, and the City wants it in place before it permits renovation work on a house with one to three units. Our City license number is 8580.

How are Yonkers permit applications filed?

Building permit submissions now go through the City’s online filing link for Housing and Buildings, whose office is downtown on South Broadway. We prepare the drawings, upload the application and answer reviewer questions.

Should we look up old permits before we start?

We recommend it. The City lets owners request existing building records by block and lot; the files are being digitized and sent by link. Knowing what was permitted before helps avoid surprises with past unpermitted work.

What if the house is a landmark or in a historic district?

Exterior changes to designated properties need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Yonkers Landmarks Preservation Board. Interior renovations generally do not, but we confirm before design.
