Roofing in Katonah, NY
Westchester Roofing Service Serving Katonah
Roof replacement and repair for Katonah’s turn-of-the-century houses and the newer homes around them, with complex rooflines, old flashing and built-in gutters handled with care.
Katonah Roofs Are Not Simple Roofs
Katonah is known as the village that moved. Most of the houses in its historic area were built or moved to their present sites between 1885 and 1910, and they show the styles of that period: Queen Anne and Victorian houses with steep gables, dormers, porches, turrets and many intersecting roof planes.
Every one of those intersections is a place where water can get in. Leaks in older Katonah houses rarely come from the middle of a roof slope. They come from valleys, from chimney and wall flashing, from the joints of porch roofs, and from old built-in gutters that have rotted the wood beneath them.

Replacing a Roof on an Older Katonah House
- Decking: old plank sheathing is repaired or overlaid where needed so shingles have a sound base.
- Flashing: new step, counter and valley flashing, in copper where the house calls for it.
- Ventilation: balanced intake and exhaust, which older attics often lack.
- Gutters: box gutters relined or replaced, and downspouts that move water away from old foundations.
- Materials: architectural shingles in a profile and color that suit the house, or slate repair where the slate is still good.
Roofs aren’t subject to Katonah historic district review, but we still roof in a way that respects the house.
Outside the Historic Area
Beyond the village center, Katonah and the rest of northern Bedford have later colonials, contemporaries and country houses on large, tree-covered lots.
Tree cover
Shade and debris mean moss, clogged valleys and storm damage. Trimming and good gutters help.
Large, complex roofs
Big houses often have multiple roof sections. Some need a membrane on low-slope parts.
Storm response
After a storm, we can dry in a damaged roof temporarily and then repair it properly.
Katonah Roofing FAQs
Does the Katonah historic district review roof replacements?
According to the Town of Bedford, the Katonah Historic District Advisory Commission reviews major changes to exterior appearance, but roofs and paint colors are not subject to its review. Other exterior work on the same project, such as new dormers or windows, may be. A Town building permit may still be needed for the roof itself.
What about Bedford Village?
Bedford Village has its own historic district review board, and exterior alterations there can need a certificate of approval before a building permit is issued. If your house is in Bedford Village rather than Katonah, we check this first.
Our Victorian has built-in gutters. Should we keep them?
Built-in or box gutters are part of many older Katonah houses, and they can be relined rather than removed. When they leak, it is usually the lining that has failed, and water then rots the cornice. We assess the wood and recommend relining or a different system.
Can a slate roof be repaired instead of replaced?
Often. Good slate lasts a very long time. The problems are usually broken slates, rusted nails and worn flashing. We tell you whether repair makes sense or whether the slate has reached the end of its life.
Where is the building department?
The Town of Bedford Building Department is at 425 Cherry Street in Bedford Hills and serves Katonah, Bedford Hills and Bedford Village.
