Pound Ridge Roofs Come in Two Kinds
Most of our Pound Ridge roofing calls fall into two groups. The first is older houses in and around the hamlet, where the Pound Ridge Historic District holds 46 contributing buildings, most of them built between 1780 and 1852. The earliest, the Capt. Joseph Lockwood House, dates to 1758. These roofs often have plank decks, several additions tied in over the decades, and chimneys that predate modern flashing.
The second is houses on large wooded lots, many of them much newer, with long, sprawling roofs, skylights and clerestories. They’re hidden from the road and surrounded by trees, so they collect debris and stay shaded. Both kinds benefit from the same basics: tear-off to the deck, repairs, ice barrier, new flashing and real attic ventilation.

Landmarks and Roof Material
Pound Ridge’s code is specific about roofs. Section 17-2 defines exterior architectural features to include the kind and texture of materials, siding, trim and roof material. On a designated landmark or in a local historic district, a change to any of those goes through the Landmarks and Historic District Commission. Paint color is excluded.
In practice, a like-for-like asphalt replacement on an ordinary house goes straight to the Building Department at the Town House. Swapping wood shingles for asphalt, or asphalt for metal, on a protected property is a different conversation, and we prepare the photos and samples the Commission needs. The photo is an aerial of one of our own builds with new roof sheathing in place.

Pound Ridge Roofing FAQs
Where do I get a roofing permit in Pound Ridge?
From the Town Building Department at the Town House, 179 Westchester Avenue, phone 914-764-5511. The Town also has an online Building Permit Viewer for checking permit records on a property.
My house is a landmark. Does the roof need extra approval?
Chapter 17 of the Town Code defines exterior architectural features to include the kind and texture of materials and the roof material, and the Landmarks and Historic District Commission reviews those changes on designated properties. Paint color isn’t included. Replacing roof material on a landmark should be reviewed before the permit.
Is the hamlet center a historic district?
The Pound Ridge Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1985, covers about 95 acres and 46 contributing buildings, most built between 1780 and 1852. National listing and local designation aren’t the same thing, so we check the Town’s records for your property.
We have wetlands near the house. Does that matter for a roof?
The Town regulates activity within 150 feet of wetlands. A roof replacement on an existing house rarely raises an issue, but we keep dumpsters and staging off wet areas and ask the Town if anything is close.
How long is the roof covered?
Our written warranty covers the roof we install for 10 years and other workmanship for 1 year. Manufacturer coverage on the shingles is in addition.
