The Village Inspection Path for a Bath
Tarrytown’s Building Department is run by the Building Inspector with a staff of five, from One Depot Plaza. For a bathroom, the plumbing permit sets the pace.
1. Plumbing permit
Filed by a Westchester County licensed plumber, with the fixture worksheet from the Village portal.
2. Roughing inspection
New drain, vent and supply lines are checked while the walls are open.
3. Testing
The new piping is tested before it’s covered.
4. Final
Fixtures set, everything running, and the Village signs off.

Baths in Tarrytown Houses
Tarrytown incorporated as a village in 1870 and has 5,113 homes (2020 census), from 19th-century houses near Main Street to newer apartments and condominiums. Older bathrooms here are often small, with a tub against an outside wall and cast-iron drains below it.
We check the floor framing and the drain before planning a curbless shower or a heavier stone floor. The bath in the photo is a Guardian remodel with marble-look tile, a white double vanity and a sliding glass shower door.
Who Does What
Guardian, a family business remodeling since 1980, handles the demolition, carpentry, tile and finish work. Plumbing and electrical are done by licensed subcontractors for specialty trades, supervised by a Guardian project manager who books the inspections and keeps you posted.
If you’re planning a kitchen too, our Tarrytown kitchen remodeling page explains how the Village values renovation work. You’ll find more finished baths on the bathroom remodeling page, and you can read our Google Reviews.
Tarrytown Bathroom Remodeling FAQs
Is a plumbing permit needed to replace a toilet and vanity in Tarrytown?
Tarrytown’s Building Department says plumbing permits are required for all plumbing work in the Village, done by plumbers licensed by Westchester County. Call the department at 914-631-3668 if you want to confirm a small swap; for a full remodel, the answer is yes.
Which inspections will the plumbing go through?
The Village’s fee schedule lists separate roughing, testing and final inspections, plus a gas test when gas piping is involved. We schedule them so tile doesn’t go up before the rough work is signed off.
How many fixtures does the base plumbing fee cover?
The $120 application fee covers four fixtures; each fixture after that is $20, per the Village’s fee schedule. A typical full bath with a toilet, sink, tub and shower valve is right around that line.
What if the inspector has to come back?
The Village charges a $200 re-inspection fee on any permit. Our project manager walks the job before every inspection so it’s ready the first time.
What warranty do you offer?
One year on Guardian’s workmanship, in writing, plus the manufacturers’ warranties on fixtures and glass.
