Home Additions in Tarrytown, NY

Westchester Home Addition Service Serving Tarrytown

Additions for Tarrytown’s Victorians, colonials and mid-century homes, designed to pass Village review and built by Guardian.

Why Age Matters in Tarrytown

Tarrytown is full of homes built well before 1929, and that date matters. Under the Village Code, any addition to a pre-1929 building goes to the Architectural Review Board no matter how small it is. The ARB has five members, including an architect and a member drawn from a Historical Society of the Tarrytowns list.

So on many Tarrytown projects the schedule starts with the ARB, not with the building permit. We plan the design and submission timing around that.

Seen From Above

This overhead drone photo shows a Guardian home under construction with new roof sheathing in place. We frame, roof, side and finish additions with our own project management, and specialty trades are licensed, insured subcontractors we supervise.

Guardian has been in construction since 1980 and holds Westchester County HIC #WC-38383-H24. Workmanship is warrantied for one year in writing. Financing available.

Budget and Schedule Factors

Every addition is priced on its own, so we do not publish set prices. The biggest cost drivers are foundation type, roof complexity, plumbing (a bathroom or kitchen adds cost), and finish level. On older Tarrytown homes, tying into old framing and matching historic details also take time. We give you a written estimate with each part broken out so you can adjust the scope.

As for schedule, design and ARB approval often take longer than construction itself, so it pays to start planning well ahead of when you want to break ground.

We can also help you decide what to include now and what to leave for later, such as finishing an attic or basement space under the addition. Building the shell now and finishing it later can spread the cost without redoing work.

If your home is newer than 1929 and the addition is not visible from the street, ARB review may not apply, and the permit can move faster. We confirm which path applies before design.

Tarrytown Addition FAQs

Does my addition need Architectural Review Board approval?

If your house was built before 1929, yes. Tarrytown’s Village Code (Section 9-4) sends additions of any size on pre-1929 buildings to the ARB. Other exterior changes visible from the street may also be referred.

When does the ARB meet?

The board meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 pm. First-time submissions are due 18 days before the meeting, on paper.

Where do I apply for the building permit?

At the Tarrytown Building Department, One Depot Plaza (914-631-3668). The Village requires permits for almost all construction.

Do you match old siding and trim?

Yes. On older Tarrytown houses we match clapboard exposure, trim profiles and roof pitch so the addition blends in, which also helps with ARB approval.
