Basement Finishing in Purchase, NY

Westchester Basement Finishing Service Serving Purchase

Lower levels for larger Purchase homes, planned as gyms, media rooms and guest suites, with Harrison permits and licensed trades managed by Guardian.

Big Footprints, Underused Basements

Many Purchase properties sit on generous lots, and many of the homes were built with full basements that only ever held storage, a boiler and a laundry corner. With that much square footage under the house, finishing is often the most direct way to add a room the family actually uses.

The hamlet’s roots go back to a 1695 land purchase, and it later became home to estates, a Quaker meeting and, more recently, college campuses. The houses vary widely in age and style, and so do their basements. Some have nine-foot pours and walkouts; others sit lower with ducts running across the middle.

A Finished Lower Level by Guardian

This photo is from one of our own basement projects: marble-look tile underfoot, dark walls with white wainscoting and a built-in media wall with an electric fireplace. Tile and moisture-tolerant finishes hold up well below grade.

In a big Purchase basement, the same approach can be split into zones: a media area like this one, a gym with rubber flooring, and a quiet office or guest room at the far end.

Zones We Often Plan in Purchase Basements

Home gym

Rubber or vinyl flooring, extra outlets, ventilation and a ceiling height that works for the equipment.

Media room

Recessed lighting on dimmers, wiring for the screen and sound, and a layout away from the mechanical room.

Guest suite

A bedroom with an emergency escape opening, smoke and CO alarms, and a bath where drainage allows.

Wine or storage room

A dedicated space kept away from the boiler and laundry so it stays cool and organized.

Filing With Harrison, Step by Step

  1. Measure the basement and record the mechanicals, drains and any signs of past water.
  2. Prepare drawings with a design professional where the scope calls for them.
  3. Deliver a complete application to 1 Heineman Place in person or by mail.
  4. Frame, rough in the licensed electrical and plumbing, and pass each inspection before insulation and drywall.

Purchase Basement Finishing FAQs

Who issues the permit for a basement in Purchase?

Purchase is a hamlet of the Town/Village of Harrison, so the Harrison Building Department at 1 Heineman Place handles it (914-670-3050). Harrison does not take electronic submissions, so applications go in person or by mail, and incomplete packages are mailed back. We assemble a complete set before filing.

Will the Architectural Board of Review look at a basement?

Harrison sends most residential construction to its Architectural Board of Review. Work that stays inside the foundation usually raises fewer design questions, but a new areaway, egress well or exterior door changes what neighbors see. We confirm with the Building Department how your scope will be routed.

Can a large basement hold a gym, wine room and guest suite together?

Often it can, if the clear height, drainage and mechanical layout allow it. We plan each zone around where the panel, boiler or furnace and the main drain sit, and we give the guest room a code-compliant emergency escape opening.

Do you handle the electrical and plumbing?

Yes, through licensed, insured subcontractors supervised by our project manager. They pull and close their own trade work under the permit, and we schedule the inspections.
