Does Putnam County Health have to approve our renovation?

If the layout changes, usually yes. The Putnam County Health Department requires its approval before a building permit for any renovation that modifies an existing floor plan or adds living area. The review fee is $100, and sketches by non-professionals are accepted. We prepare the submission with the rest of the permit package.

Where is the permit filed for a Mahopac house?

Mahopac is a hamlet of the Town of Carmel, so the Town Building Department at 60 McAlpin Avenue handles it (845-628-1500, office hours 8:30 to 4:30). Inspections are scheduled with two to three days’ notice.

Our house is old and has no Certificate of Occupancy. Is that unusual?

Not always. The Town of Carmel’s CO requirement has exceptions, including structures built before 1955. A whole-house renovation is a good time to bring the record up to date, because the new work will be inspected and certified.

Will heating and oil tank work need separate sign-off?

The Town issues Certificates of Compliance for items such as HVAC equipment, oil tanks and generators. We include those in the schedule so the job closes out cleanly.
