Siding in Nelsonville, NY

Westchester & Putnam Siding Service Serving Nelsonville

Siding repair and replacement for Nelsonville’s 19th-century village houses and newer homes on the hillside above Cold Spring. Applications go in through the Village to the Philipstown building department.

A Small Village with Old Clapboard

Nelsonville was incorporated in 1855 and named for the Nelson family. Its history is tied to the West Point Foundry down the hill, and many houses along Main Street (Route 301) date from those years. The Hustis House, a mid-19th-century house that was likely built for foundry workers, is on the National Register. So is 249 Main Street, a two-story clapboard house built around 1870 in a mix of Italianate and Carpenter Gothic styles.

Houses like these are why we re-side carefully here. Old clapboard is usually nailed directly to board sheathing, and the trim is part of the style. We remove siding by hand near the trim, replace rotted boards to match their exposure, and add a water barrier, flashing and new siding without burying the corner boards or the cornice. The photo shows one of our own projects in progress.

Small Village, Full Service

Nelsonville’s 2020 population was 624, so most jobs are small, and they get the same project manager and written paperwork as any other. Guardian is our family team of five brothers, working alongside their father, family-run since 1980 under Putnam County HIC #52594. Licensed, insured subcontractors install the siding, supervised by a Guardian project manager. Vinyl, cedar and board-and-batten are priced separately so you can compare them.

Nelsonville Siding FAQs

Who issues building permits in Nelsonville?

Since July 1, 2023, the Town of Philipstown’s building department has handled building plan review, permits, inspections and certificates for the Village of Nelsonville. The Village still receives applications and fees and forwards them to the Town.

Is Nelsonville part of Cold Spring?

No. Nelsonville is a separate village, incorporated in 1855, just east of Cold Spring along Main Street. Both are in the Town of Philipstown.

Our house is on the National Register. Can we still re-side it?

Yes, but the goal changes from replacement to matching what’s there. We match the existing profile and exposure, restore the trim, and talk you through any review before work starts.

Can you work on a small lot right on Main Street?

Yes. We stage from the driveway or the back of the lot, and we work one wall at a time.

Do you take off every old layer?

Yes. Old houses often have asbestos-cement shingles or aluminum over the original clapboard. We test where required, strip down to the sheathing, and repair the boards before the new water barrier goes on, so nothing is trapped behind the new siding.

What warranty comes with siding?

One year on our workmanship, in writing, plus the siding manufacturer’s own product warranty.
