Westchester & Putnam Home Remodeling Service Serving Nelsonville

Careful renovations, kitchens, baths, additions and roofs for Nelsonville’s village houses and hillside homes, next to Cold Spring and Bull Hill. Village filing, Philipstown inspections and septic limits handled.

The Hikers' Hamlet

Nelsonville is a village of about one square mile, incorporated in 1855, tucked behind Cold Spring along Main Street and Route 301 at the foot of Bull Hill. It had 628 residents at the 2010 census and shares the Haldane school district with Cold Spring.

The village center is a tight cluster of 19th- and early 20th-century houses close to the street. Above it, the hillsides lead into Nelsonville Woods, 112 acres protected by a conservation easement since 2000, and Hudson Highlands State Park.

Nelsonville Remodeling FAQs

Where do we file for a building permit in Nelsonville?

Applications are submitted to the Village of Nelsonville at Village Hall, 258 Main Street, (845) 265-2500, open weekdays from 9 to 3. It’s best to call ahead. The Village forwards them to the Town of Philipstown Building Department, which has handled the Village’s inspections and code enforcement under an agreement since July 1, 2023.

Is there a sewer system in Nelsonville?

No. Village homes use private septic systems, and some older properties still have cesspools. Drinking water comes from the Village of Cold Spring’s system. That makes septic capacity the key question for any project that adds bedrooms or bathrooms.

Does the village have historic design review?

Nelsonville is within a Scenic Area of Statewide Significance, but we haven’t found a village historic district review like Cold Spring’s. Larger projects may still go to the Planning Board or Zoning Board of Appeals, which meet as needed.

Do you work on the large lots up the mountain too?

Yes. The Mountain Residential district on the hillsides has larger lots than the village center, with more room for additions but steeper driveways and more rock.

Working on a Nelsonville House?

Tell us about it. We’ll visit, explain the village filing and send a written estimate.
