Neighborhood Houses, Close Together

West Harrison reads differently from Purchase to its east. Lots are smaller, many houses are capes, split-levels and colonials, and side yards can be a few steps wide. That shapes how we work: ladders and staging go where they won’t block a neighbor’s driveway, dumpsters are sized for the street, and the crew cleans up nails and offcuts every afternoon.

History runs close to the surface here too. Merritt’s Hill in West Harrison was part of the 1776 Battle of White Plains, and Silver Lake Park, whose main entrance is on Lake Street, sits in the middle of the area. None of that changes the code requirements for siding, but it’s the kind of place where neighbors notice when a house gets a new face.

How Harrison Reviews Siding

Siding work in West Harrison is permitted by the same Town/Village of Harrison Building Department that serves the rest of Harrison, and much of it is referred to the Architectural Review Board. The Board’s job, under Section 235-66, is to prevent a house from looking excessively similar to, or out of step with, the houses near it. Basic exterior material is one of the listed features, and so is whether siding runs horizontally or vertically. Color isn’t.

We keep a West Harrison application simple: an accurate description of the material and profile, two extra 11×17 sets when the Board is involved, and photos of your house and at least two nearby houses. If the Board does nothing within 30 days of filing, the code tells the Building Inspector to issue the permit, provided the job complies otherwise.

Common West Harrison Siding Problems

Aluminum over wood

Older aluminum siding often covers the original clapboard and any rot behind it.

Split-level joints

Where the levels meet, roof-to-wall flashing is often missing.

Brittle vinyl

Early vinyl cracks at corners and J-channel after decades of sun.

Ground contact

Siding run down to soil or patios wicks water into the bottom courses.

Who Does the Work

Guardian is our family team of five brothers, working alongside their father, in business since 1980. Your siding is installed by licensed, insured subcontractors supervised by a Guardian project manager, who is also the one person you call with questions. We hold Westchester County HIC #WC-38383-H24. We install vinyl, cedar and vertical or board-and-batten siding along with new trim, soffit and fascia, and each option is priced separately so you can compare. West Harrison Siding FAQs

Is West Harrison its own village?

No. West Harrison is the northern part of the Town/Village of Harrison, with a 10604 ZIP code shared with parts of White Plains. Building permits come from the Harrison Building Department at 1 Heineman Place, phone 914-670-3050.

How long can the Architectural Review Board take?

Under Section 235-65 of the Town Code, if the Board doesn’t disapprove a referred application within 30 days of filing, the Building Inspector issues the permit as long as everything else complies. In practice we plan around the monthly meeting on the second Tuesday.

What if the Board turns the design down?

A disapproval takes the vote of at least four of the Board’s seven members, and the code allows an appeal to the Zoning Board of Appeals. It’s rare on a straightforward re-siding job, especially when we bring a design that fits the street.

Our house is close to the neighbors. How do you stage the work?

We plan ladder and scaffold positions along narrow side yards, ask you to give the neighbors a heads-up, and clear debris daily so nothing blows onto the next lot.

What warranty comes with siding?

One year on our workmanship, in writing, plus the siding manufacturer’s own product warranty.
