Siding in Cold Spring, NY
Westchester & Putnam Siding Service Serving Cold Spring
Siding repair and replacement in the Village of Cold Spring, with applications to the Historic District Review Board that follow the Village’s own Design Standards. Trim, ornament and history are kept intact.
What the Design Standards Say About Siding
Cold Spring is one of the few places we work with written, illustrated rules for siding. The Village’s Architectural and Historic District Design Standards treat buildings in two ways:
| Historic district | National Register property | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Wood or original siding recommended; man-made acceptable | Same as originally installed; otherwise wood clapboard, shingles, shakes, board-and-batten or another documented material |
| Over existing siding | Allowed if trim is raised to the new surface | Not allowed |
| Trim and ornament | Must not be covered by siding | Conserve historic fabric |
The standards include photos of what’s not permitted, such as new siding with no trim left around openings. Under Chapter 64 of the Village Code, the Board can review ordinary maintenance and repair without a public hearing. That covers work that doesn’t change the design, material, form or outward appearance, including replacement in kind.

Foundry Town Houses
Much of Cold Spring grew up around the West Point Foundry, founded in 1818, and many of the village’s modest wood-frame houses were built for its workers. Clapboard is everywhere here. The Design Standards define it as horizontal beveled boards that are thinner at the top edge. Replacing those boards in kind, at the right exposure and with the corner boards and trim restored, is usually the simplest path through review.
For a CoA application we provide photos of the house, product information and a clear description of the trim details, and we deliver it to Village Hall at 85 Main Street. Building permits for the Village are handled by the Philipstown building department. The photo shows a Guardian siding job, and our main siding page shows more.
Working Carefully in the Village
Guardian is our family team of five brothers, working alongside their father, working from Carmel since 1980 under Putnam County HIC #52594. On Cold Spring jobs we remove siding by hand around old trim, save and reinstall ornament where it’s sound, and replace what’s rotted with matching profiles. Licensed, insured subcontractors do the work under a Guardian project manager. You can read our Google Reviews.
Cold Spring Siding FAQs
Does new siding in Cold Spring's historic district need approval?
Usually. Exterior changes in the district need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic District Review Board. Ordinary maintenance and repair that doesn’t change the design, material, form or outward appearance is handled differently: the Board can decide, without a public hearing, whether the work counts as maintenance.
Can I use vinyl or another man-made siding?
The Village’s Design Standards say wood, or the same siding originally installed, is recommended, but man-made siding is acceptable in the district. For properties on the National Register, the standards are stricter: siding must match what was originally installed.
Can new siding go over the old siding?
In the district, the standards allow it if the trim is raised to match the new wall surface, and siding can never be used to cover trim or architectural ornament. For National Register properties, new siding may not go over existing siding.
How many Board members have to approve?
The Board has five members, and an application needs at least three votes in favor. It meets on the second Wednesday of the month, so we submit with time to spare.
What warranty comes with siding?
One year on our workmanship, in writing, plus the siding manufacturer’s own product warranty.
