Basement Finishing in Tarrytown, NY
Westchester Basement Finishing Service Serving Tarrytown
Finished lower levels for Tarrytown homes on the hills above the Hudson, with Village permits, older-foundation checks and licensed trades managed by Guardian.
Hillside Houses, Older Foundations
Tarrytown climbs steeply from the Hudson, and many of its homes are decades or more than a century old. On a sloping lot, part of a basement can sit near grade, which can make light, access and an escape opening easier. Older foundations, though, deserve a careful look before anyone covers them with drywall.
We visit, check the walls and floor, measure headroom and talk through what the space can realistically become.
What the Village Expects
Tarrytown’s Building Department requires permits for almost all construction. For a basement, that means drawings showing the layout, ceiling heights, egress, alarms and any new bathroom, plus separate filings by the licensed electrical and plumbing trades. We put the package together and book inspections at framing, rough-in and final.
A Guardian Basement, Finished
The finished basement in this photo, with marble-look tile, a black accent wall and a fireplace and TV wall, is our own work. It is the kind of room many Tarrytown families want: a comfortable space for movies, guests or a home office, built to the same standard as the floors above.
Since the Village set up designated historic districts in 1979, exterior changes in those areas get extra scrutiny. Interiors are a different matter, which is part of why a basement is a practical way to add space here.

Common Questions We Answer at the First Visit
Is it tall enough?
We measure against the 6 ft 8 in guidance and the 6 ft 4 in limit under beams.
Can it have a bedroom?
Only with an emergency escape opening and interconnected alarms.
Where does a bath drain?
We look at the existing drain line and whether a pump is needed.
Is it dry?
We look for signs of past water before choosing materials.

Tarrytown Basement Finishing FAQs
Do I need a permit to finish a basement in Tarrytown?
Yes. The Village of Tarrytown Building Department, at One Depot Plaza (914-631-3668), requires permits for almost all construction, and a basement converted to living space is no exception.
Will the ARB review my basement?
Not for interior work. The Architectural Review Board handles exterior changes and certificates of appropriateness. A new exterior entrance or a visible egress well could bring it in, so we ask early.
Is Tarrytown its own town?
No. Tarrytown is a village in the Town of Greenburgh, incorporated in 1870, and it runs its own Building Department. Sleepy Hollow, to the north, is a separate village with its own office.
What about older houses with stone foundations?
We look closely at older foundations before finishing, note any dampness or cracking, and pick wall and floor details that suit them. Structural repairs, if needed, go on the permit.
