Kitchens for the Village’s 19th-century houses and the newer homes above it. Old-house know-how, stretch-code insulation and one Guardian project manager.

Kitchen with white raised-panel cabinets, crown molding, a gray stone-look tile backsplash, stainless steel appliances, pendant lights and a dark island with a white countertop

Foundry-Era Houses, Modern Kitchens

Much of the Village is on the National Register as the Cold Spring Historic District, because so many 19th-century buildings survive from the years when the West Point Foundry employed the town. Those houses are often narrow and deep, with the kitchen at the back, floors that have settled and walls of plaster on wood lath.

The kitchen pictured is a Guardian remodel with raised-panel cabinets and crown molding. That style sits comfortably with original trim and tall ceilings.

Living Through a Village Remodel

Village lots are small and street parking can be tight. We plan dumpster placement and deliveries ahead, keep the work area sealed with dust barriers and clean up every day. Where possible, we set up a temporary kitchen with the old refrigerator and a microwave in another room so you can still cook.

Cold Spring Kitchen FAQs

Does the Historic District Review Board approve kitchen interiors?

No. Cold Spring’s historic district law is about the outside of buildings; even the Board’s site visits are limited to the exterior. If the kitchen job changes the outside, for example a new vent cap or a new door to the yard, that part may need a Certificate of Appropriateness.

Who inspects kitchen work in the Village?

The Philipstown Building Department, at 2 Cedar Street (845-265-5202), has covered Cold Spring since 2017 under a shared-services arrangement.

What is the stretch energy code?

Philipstown has adopted NYStretch, a stricter energy code than the State minimum. When we open exterior walls in a kitchen, the insulation and air sealing have to meet it.

Can you fit an island in a row house kitchen?

Sometimes a narrow island or a rolling cart works. In many Main Street-area houses, a peninsula or a wall of tall cabinets uses the space better.

What warranty do we get?

One year on Guardian’s workmanship, in writing, plus manufacturers’ warranties on cabinets, counters and appliances.
