Basement Finishing in New Rochelle, NY

Westchester Basement Finishing Service Serving New Rochelle

From older houses near downtown to postwar streets in the north end, Guardian turns New Rochelle basements into rooms your family will actually use.

A City With Many Kinds of Basements

New Rochelle was settled by French Huguenots in 1688, and its housing covers more than a century of building styles. A basement under a 1910s house near Huguenot Park has different walls, ceiling heights and pipes than one under a 1950s split-level farther north. We start every job by looking at what is actually down there.

That first visit tells us how much headroom is left after beams and ducts, whether there are signs of past water, and where a bathroom drain could go.

What a Finished Lower Level Can Look Like

This basement, with marble-look tile, a dark feature wall and a fireplace and TV wall, is one of our own projects. It is a good example of what a basement can be when lighting, trim and materials are treated as seriously as they are upstairs.

In New Rochelle, a project like this goes through the Buildings Department’s online application, with separate plumbing filings for any new fixtures.

New Rochelle Basement Finishing FAQs

How are basement permits filed in New Rochelle?

Through the City’s Buildings Department, on the ground floor of City Hall at 515 North Avenue. New Rochelle takes building applications online through its CitySquared portal, where drawings are uploaded and plumbing work is listed by fixture.

Is there a separate plumbing review?

Yes. Plumbing for a new basement bath or laundry is filed and inspected separately, and the City has its own Plumbing Inspector. Our licensed plumbing subcontractor files that part.

My house is in Rochelle Park or Rochelle Heights. Does that matter?

For interior work, usually not. The local historic district rules apply to visible exterior changes, which need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic and Landmarks Review Board. A new exterior basement entrance could fall under that.

Can a basement bedroom be legal?

It needs an emergency escape opening, interconnected smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and enough ceiling height. If those can’t be met, the room can still be a den, office or playroom.
