Chappaqua is a hamlet in the Town of New Castle. Permits are issued by the New Castle Building Division at Town Hall, 200 South Greeley Avenue, which also handles Millwood.

Will our project need Architectural Review Board approval?

Probably. New Castle requires ARB approval before a building permit for most work that changes the outside of a house, with few exceptions. We prepare elevations, materials and photos of the existing house for the board.

What is the F.A.R. worksheet?

New Castle limits how much floor area a house can have relative to its lot. A floor area ratio worksheet, prepared from the plans and survey, shows the existing and proposed numbers and goes with the application. We check it before design is final so an addition isn’t drawn larger than the lot allows.

Are there other permits besides the building permit?

Depending on the property, New Castle may require steep-slope, wetland or tree-removal permits. We identify them during the first site review so they’re filed together.
