A kitchen planned around how your household actually lives
Most of the kitchens we are asked to remodel in this area were built for a different era: a closed galley in a 1950s ranch, a split-level kitchen cut off from the family room, or a 1980s colonial with a peninsula that turns every dinner into a traffic jam. The question is never just which cabinets to buy. It is where people cook, where they gather, where the groceries land, and what has to change behind the walls to make that work.
Guardian Remodeling Corp has been remodeling homes across Westchester and Putnam since 1980. We start every kitchen with a walkthrough of the existing room, measurements, and a conversation about what frustrates you today. From there we put together a scope and a written estimate, and once you approve it we manage the whole project: ordering, permits, demolition, rough-in, inspections, installation and finish work.
Electrical, plumbing and other specialty work is done by licensed subcontractors supervised by Guardian. You deal with one company, and that company is accountable for the result.

What a kitchen remodel with Guardian can include
Every project is scoped to your house and budget. These are the pieces we most often plan and build:
Layout changes
Moving the sink, range or refrigerator to fix the work triangle, or opening a wall to the dining or family room. Load-bearing walls get a properly sized beam and, where required, an engineer.
Cabinets and storage
Stock, semi-custom or custom lines, installed level and plumb, with pantry pull-outs, deep drawers and full-height uppers. See cabinet installation.
Countertops and islands
Templated after the cabinets are set, with seating, prep sinks and outlets placed where they will actually be used.
Backsplash and flooring
Lighting and circuits
Recessed, under-cabinet and pendant lighting, plus the dedicated appliance circuits a modern kitchen needs, installed by licensed electricians.
Ventilation and appliances
Range hoods ducted to the outside and rough-ins planned around your appliance specifications before cabinets are ordered.

Planning a kitchen in a Westchester or Putnam house
Older housing stock is the norm here, and it shapes the plan. Walls in a pre-war colonial may hide plaster and lath, knob-and-tube remnants or framing that was altered decades ago. A 1970s raised ranch often has a kitchen that backs up to a bearing wall. We open up suspect areas early, explain what we find, and agree on any change in writing before work continues.
Utilities vary from town to town. Many homes in northern Westchester and Putnam use propane rather than natural gas, and many are on well water and septic. That affects range selection, venting and whether a garbage disposal makes sense, so we ask early. If your home is on septic, check with your septic professional before adding a disposal.
Finally, settle the appliances first. Cabinet sizes, electrical circuits, gas lines and hood ducting all depend on the exact models, and changing an appliance after the cabinets are ordered is the most common cause of avoidable delay.
How a Guardian kitchen remodel runs
1. Walkthrough
We measure, photograph and talk through how you use the room.
2. Written estimate
A scope and price in writing, so you know what is included before you commit.
3. Selections and ordering
Cabinets, counters, tile, fixtures and appliances confirmed and ordered against field measurements.
4. Permits
We file with your local building department when the work requires it.
5. Demolition and rough-in
Dust protection goes up, the old kitchen comes out, and framing, plumbing and electrical are roughed in and inspected.
6. Finish and walkthrough
Cabinets, counters, backsplash, trim and fixtures go in. We walk the room with you and close out the punch list.
Permits and licensing, town by town
Westchester and Putnam do not share one building department. Each city, town and village has its own, with its own forms, fees and inspection schedule, and villages such as Cold Spring, Brewster and Bronxville handle their own permits separately from the surrounding town. Part of what you get with Guardian is a team that files these applications regularly and knows what each office expects.
Contractor licensing is handled at the county level. Guardian holds Westchester County Home Improvement License #WC-38383-H24 and Putnam County Home Improvement Contractor License #52594. Ask any contractor you are considering for their license numbers, and check that the license matches the county where your home is.
Living with a kitchen remodel
A kitchen is the room a household notices most when it is out of service. We set up plastic barriers and floor protection, keep the work area swept at the end of each day, and tell you in advance when water or power will be shut off. Many clients set up a temporary kitchen with a microwave, a coffee maker and the refrigerator in a nearby room; we help plan where that goes so it stays out of the way of the work.
You will know who to call. Questions about schedule, selections or anything you notice on site go to Guardian, and we answer them.

Kitchen remodeling FAQs
Do you handle the building permit for a kitchen remodel?
Yes. When the work needs a permit, which is usually the case for structural, plumbing or electrical changes, Guardian prepares and files the application with your town, village or city building department, schedules the inspections and keeps the paperwork with your project file. Cosmetic work such as new countertops on existing cabinets often needs no permit; we will tell you which applies before you sign.
Are you licensed to work in both Westchester and Putnam?
Yes. Guardian Remodeling Corp holds Westchester County Home Improvement License #WC-38383-H24 and Putnam County Home Improvement Contractor License #52594, plus Connecticut Home Improvement Contractor registration HIC.0707535 and New York City General Contractor Registration #627789, and we carry insurance. Ask us for copies with your estimate.
Who actually does the work in my kitchen?
Your project is run by Guardian from start to finish. Specialty trades such as electricians and plumbers are licensed subcontractors supervised by Guardian, so you have one company and one point of contact responsible for the whole job.
What warranty comes with a Guardian kitchen?
Our workmanship is covered by a 1-year warranty. Cabinets, appliances, fixtures and countertop materials also carry the manufacturer warranties that come with those products.
How long will we be without a kitchen?
It depends on the scope: a counter and backsplash update is far shorter than a remodel that moves walls and plumbing. You get a written schedule with your proposal, and we sequence the work so the room is out of service for as little time as possible.
Can you work with a cabinet design I already have?
Yes. We can build from your designer or showroom plans, or help you plan the layout and selections from scratch. Either way we field-measure before anything is ordered.
How do I get an estimate?
Call 914-912-0385 or use the form on this page. We visit, measure, talk through what you want, and follow up with a written estimate. Estimates are free.
What's the difference between a pull-and-replace kitchen and a layout change?
In a pull-and-replace, the sink, range, refrigerator and cabinet runs stay where they are. You get new cabinets, countertops, backsplash, flooring and lighting in the same footprint. A layout change moves things around: opening or removing a wall, relocating the sink or range, adding an island with power or plumbing, or running a new gas line. Layout changes usually bring in more trades and inspections, and sometimes structural work, so they generally cost more and take longer. Neither one is better. It depends on whether your current layout works for you, and we can walk through both at your free estimate.
Can you move my sink, range or gas line, or take down a wall?
Often, yes. First we look at what’s involved: whether the wall is load-bearing, where a relocated drain and vent can run, the route for the gas line, and whether your electrical panel can take new circuits. Removing a load-bearing wall means putting in a properly sized beam, and most building departments want drawings for that kind of work. Licensed electrical and plumbing subcontractors handle that work under Guardian’s supervision. We’ll tell you what’s practical in your house before you settle on a design.
Can you open up my kitchen by removing a wall?
Often, yes. First we confirm whether the wall is load-bearing. If it is, the load it carries has to be picked up by a new beam, typically an LVL (laminated veneer lumber) beam sized for the span and the weight above it. That beam needs proper posts at each end, and the load has to be carried all the way down to solid support or footings below. When stamped drawings are needed, we bring in one of the architects or engineers we recommend. We pull the building permit, and licensed subcontractors reroute any wiring, plumbing or ductwork in the wall.
Do you handle the design, or do I need an architect or kitchen designer?
Most kitchens that keep the same footprint don’t need an architect. We can help you plan the layout and selections, or build from plans you already have from a designer or showroom. If the project includes structural changes, such as removing a load-bearing wall or adding on, many building departments require drawings stamped by a licensed architect or engineer. We work with several architects we can recommend for different kinds of projects, and if you already have your own architect, we’re glad to work with them.
Do you offer financing for a kitchen remodel?
Yes. We offer financing through HFS Financial, which provides personal loans, so you don’t have to borrow against your home equity. Checking your rate doesn’t affect your credit. HFS sets the rates and terms based on your application, and you can see how it works on our financing page. If you’d rather pay directly, we accept check, credit card, Zelle and cash. Ask about financing when you schedule your free estimate, and we can talk through how it fits your project.
What towns do you serve for kitchen remodeling?
We remodel kitchens across Westchester County and Putnam County. In Putnam that includes Carmel, Mahopac, Brewster, Patterson, Kent, Putnam Valley, Cold Spring and Garrison. In Westchester it includes Yorktown Heights, Somers, Bedford, Katonah, Mount Kisco, Chappaqua, White Plains, Scarsdale, New Rochelle, Rye and Yonkers. We hold home improvement licenses in both counties, plus a Yonkers license. See our service areas page for the full list, or call 914-912-0385 to confirm your town.
